The improvements going on in Downtown Ogden continue to impress. The Ogden River Parkway now connects to greenbelt trails in West Haven and Riverdale. The trail system is quite remarkable and enjoyable to run or ride on.
Today I wanted to showcase the portion of the trail between Washington Blvd. and just west of Wall Ave. Ogden now has a tremendous asset flowing through the heart of the city.
The Ogden River is now a great place for family outings. Note: The wildlife in the area is still unfamiliar with people. Unlike the ducks at Beus Pond which have had generations of people feed bread crumbs to them, the ducks on this stretch of the Ogden River run away from people well before you can can get close to them. I guess that is a testament to their "newness" to the area. Regardless, they are a welcome addition.
Be sure to get out and enjoy this great part of the city!
Well, we all felt the effects of the windstorm on Thursday December 1st. Our home lost power at 4:10am and we were without power until 10:30pm that evening. I have no idea how our pioneer forefathers entertained themselves in the cold dark winter months. Here is a video I scrapped together from some scenes around my neighborhood. A colleague of mine passed this video along in an email today. I thought I would share this most insightful exchange between an antagonistic British hostess and a hedge fund manager who understands economics. He explains how the housing market works at the very first. (Note: The reasons he cites for the market bust are the exact same reasons real estate is such a great investment right now.):

If I ever build a home like those in a place like that, I will drive pylons into the ground before I pour my foundation. As it stands now, when we have an earthquake, these homes will just sluff off the mountain into a heap of debris.

My wife and I left the kids with a sitter and headed out for a Saturday hike. We decided to visit Waterfall Canyon just on the edge of town. You may recall our hike with the kids to this same location last may. In the winter, the waterfall freezes over into a beautiful ice flow. Here is a brief video of our adventure:
Kim is much more graceful than I am when it comes to sliding down the mountain. While we were at the waterfall the sun shined on the ice and the entire structure began to pop and crackle. After this footage was taken, giant chunks of ice began to break off and cascade down to where we were. Being hit with one of these could be fatal so if you head up there, be very careful.
It was a beautiful and peaceful hike. We met a hiker on the trail. When we talked to him it sounded like he wasn't having fun. Taking a quick look at his shorts and tennis shoes it was no wonder why. If you head up, be prepared for slick conditions. The trail is heavily used and the snow is packed and very slippery in many places as you can see in the video. Regardless, waterfall canyon is a great escape to clear the head and enjoy nature.
